Moojuice Sketchbook
  • Hey guys, im currently studying animation with moski (a member of this site) and he told me this is where I could really improve my work with decent criticism unlike other sites out there. Its very little what I'm posting now but its my goal over the Christmas break to do alot of practise. Thanks for having me here:)
  • please post references when doing studies, it'll help us to give you paintovers.

on those head studies, You are either ignoring or not aware of some basic principles using construction to draw.

i would recommend doing copies of loomis / bridgeman ..etc to learn basic proportions. They are not steadfast perfect rules, but they will help you approximate a lot when doing studies.

knowing that the face is made up of 1/3 from forhead [at hairline] to the brow, then 1/3 from the brow to bottom of nose, then 1/3 from bottom of nose to chin. under the nose, the areas of lip are broken down into 1/3 from bottom of nose to the mouth line, then 1/3 to from the mouthline to the top of the chin line, then 1/3 from the chin line to the bottom of chin[though that can have a larger variance depending on the person's chin] Knowing that the eyes are spaced about 1 eye apart, and the overall head is about 5 eyes wide. the ear will set inbetween the area created between the bottom of the nose and the brow.

i don't know what you're using for software/brush...but if you are using photoshop, i would recommend this brush:

  • Thanks Devin, I seem to always disregard proportions when I draw. I drew a head from my imaginaiton considering what you just told me, to see if there is anything else I need to work on.
Ive got to seriously pull my head in, working 9 hours a day on a farm earning money is a bitch and ive gotta get in as much drawing as I can.
  • Hi, colour studies I think you need to paint attention mostly to brining across the mood you feel that photo conveys, and finding areas of biggest contrast. Those things will help you key colours together in a correct way. I do a quick colour study to show you (I don't even bother getting shapes exact, just colour!), hope you can read my sloppy writing.

Compare, squint, cross reference! x repeat
  • Thanks man! This has really helped alot, after looking at your critique im not sure on posting these anymore, but I will:) Ill get onto the colour studies right away! Heres a couple of personal stuff, just to vent out a little, then back to the studies.
  • I think you should keep practicing more on fundamental stuffs, do more anatomy studies and please try to take more life drawing classes, drawing random characters help you the lest, I did a quick paint over on your last painting, do more geometry studies too to help you improving your eyes on value, value is the first thing to make things work in rendering
  • Thanks Herman for your crit. I cant do any life drawing lessons at the momment because im in such a remote area, but as soon as I get back to uni Ill be attending them. I can still practise from photos I guess. Also could you give me examples of 'gemoetry studies to study value'? Do you mean painting basic shapes in grayscale?

Heres some more studies and some on a personal project.
  • these last are looking better man, when you drawing landscapes is good to check out the perspective - your's is wrong on all of the photo ref. practices, the two characters look good but try to using more colors not so limited palette and last in the mill study I noticed some issues with the values try squint your eyes more often ;)
    best regards!
  • Thanks peter, I keep forgetting to keep squinting my eyes through the piece, ive gotta focus. Ive gotta study more of my perspective as well.

Studies of value and not enough of female anatomy
  • I cant get my hands on any bridgman books since I live in a rural area. Loomis is great and all but I think a bit of change is in order.....:D
  • good to see you do more practices, focus more on proportion and anatomy as I feel you make up the characters a lot just from your mind, look at Loomis figure drawing book it teaches you everything about basic, about rendering you have similar problem like peter so check my comments on his, I did a quick painting on your previous black and white drawing so you know what i mean problems
  • Thanks Herman and yes you are right, most of these are from my head. Its just when I do a bit of study on an arm or figure, I get the sudden urge to do my mine own thing which doesnt help me at all. Ive really got to get a hold of it:cry:

Heres a bit more stuff, currently in the process of moving to hopefully a faster internet connection and cooler house close to the city. I wont have a scanner where we are living so I'll be drawing in photoshop until I can afford one! Also, since im living closer I can now get to life drawing classes which is awsum!
  • Hey guys, been busy moving into my new place and still haven't got the internet up. The first couple are life studies with crappy values and the rest are studies and my own stuff.
  • nice studies mate, keep going with studying anatomy and try to make these still life images more clear ;) the one with the bottle look really good!!!
  • Thanks Peter, yea i seem to always be pulled away from a life study just when im about to start defining it. Although this week I pulled through and kinda finished one! Not happy with the values though:(
  • Here's a few things that ive been working on for a story im creating. Ive been studying all week but i havnt been able to get my hands on a scanner.
  • Hey moojuice, quick comment on the last one - the blue in your rim light is nearly as warm as the main light hitting the character, you need to shift the chroma of that blue towards something a bit cooler - try using a soft light layer with a light brush and a dark green/blue. It's a hack way of doing it, but should do the job.

Also that character is off balance and looks like it would fall over to the left
  • mubmeemblemgng...ermm what rayk said is good.

I really think you need to do some nice long value studies...would help more than me talking at u... but I did some paintovers for u
  • Thanks Devin! The priestess looks shitloads better and yea, ive got to do ALOT of value practise. Also are there any tricks or things to check for the correct value in a painting? Like switch the mode to grayscale or something of the sort?

Havnt been on here for a while cause of my final year animation short film. Ive seen, drawn and revised waaaayyy too many storyboards over the last week. I never want to see another one again -__- Anyways, there is some colour studies using a hard brush with no opacity, so i focus on squinting my eyes and getting the colours right the first time. The second is a banner that I made for our animated film, its me and my team mates.
  • good to see you pumping up some exercises, keep up the good work
