Thanks herman, that adds alot to the character as well! Here is another concept for an assignment im working on for uni. Im feeling the legs are wrong and the girl's stance is very boring, maybe she should be looking at the viewer?
can u explain a bit about what is supposed to be going on for this illo/what is the illo about. It'll help a lot with feedback...
has she taken control of a monster, has she created the monster? what is the blue going into on her dress?? what's happening in the scene?? I'm just left with questions :|
Hey Devin, the thing on her dress is a tailsman which through her journeys sucks up the spirits from the creatures that she defeats. She then can, if she chooses or not, to awaken large un-organic objects by getting her tailsman and releasing it into the object, The thing that she is riding on used to be a statue and she can control its actions to help fight or get over large obstacles. Haha, i can see now how confusing it is. Hope this helps with your feedback:)
"Havnt been on here for a while cause of my final year animation short film. Ive seen, drawn and revised waaaayyy too many storyboards over the last week. I never want to see another one again -__- Anyways, there is some colour studies using a hard brush with no opacity, so i focus on squinting my eyes and getting the colours right the first time. The second is a banner that I made for our animated film, its me and my team mates."
Here is a segment from a book called Alla Prima,
"SQUINTING DON'TS 1: It is not helpful in determining colour. Colours darken when you do it, and you can't identify them properly. Open your eyes for colour.
2: It is also not meant to be a way of seeing the true values in a subject. Obviously, the actual values will be lighter when you view your subject normally with open eyes (the darkest darks, however, will remain as they appear when you squint). Keep in mind that the purpose of squinting is to make judgments about the relationships among and between VALUES, not to paint the actual shades you see during squinting. In other words you squint down not to see how light or dark things really are, but rather which values are lightest, which are darkest, and which fall into the middle tones- COMPARED TO ONE ANOTHER.
Wow, thanks rmangano. I should be getting Alla Prima soon, whenever I have enough money to get it:) This really helped alot man, now i understand it better so hopefully my studies are more precise. Really appreciated!!!!
Some stuff ive been working on recently, falling behind in the studies.
Some recent stuff, including some freelance commisions and the finished version of the female portrait from the above post. Been incredibly busy with our final short animation film for when i graduate for the end of the year. Really need to get into studying but i can't find any time @___@
hey moojuice ! how you're doing ? anyway man, before rendering your illustrations, be sure that all the proportions are good, because you can make a badass render, it won't never fix the proportions mistakes, so be carreful about that ok ! than, when you put your values, you're not thinking enough about the form . before i put the values, i first think about where the cast shadows are, because when they're well placed, it gives a great information, about where the light source is ! and when you really know where it is, the rest of the stuff will be easier ! then, i think about the cast shadow, and reflected light . and finally adding the light area, and highlights . I generally use 6 values at the beginning, then, with the blending, and stuff, it increases . here is a quick overpaint i did about the first portrait of the last update ! not perfect but i hope it can help !
Thanks kikindaface, its always the fundamentals with me! Got to work harder! Since your critique ive not been moving onto a sketch until i know its right before i get in too deep. Here is a pic im doing for a special someone.
hey moojuice!, nice sketchbook you got here, very nice imagination!, so the critiques, you should do more pencil work!, copy things from life, whatever you have in your room, remember always to go from general detail to particular detail, never start drawing the eyes for example, until you have the hole structure right, copy some more stuff and pictures for the anatomy, structure and proportions. ill be wating to see those studies! cheers!
I think she is the focus (off course) so I redraw a quick one to show you what is wrong with her pose especially with the hands and the skirt also good to give her some wind to spice the environment up a bit haha
Thanks Herman! You bring such life into a figure! I tried a couple of times to fix it but just wasn't happy with it. I did incorporate what you critiqued into the painting below.
So hey guys, havnt posted in a while. I was kinda dealing with the Brisbane floods, I wasn't really affected in anyway except my job got completly flooded....so now I have graduated and now unemployed :(. I've been fitting in as much practice as I can, but I don't want to show the other stuff, its horrible.
I am really loving the painting at the top! has a great feeling too it and you really nailed the feeling of a storm and a flash flood. It is good that you are thinking of ways to ground the feet. One of my pet pevs is characters that arn't grounded to the environment, this is good stuff. I'd like to see you use a few more brushes to define some of the objects in you environment study. It looks very bloby at the moment and if the reference was not there I would have a hard time trying to figure out what the things in the scene actually are.
Hey guys, hopefully the Dream Gauge Gang will come back and start posting again. Dominance War has just begun and its a quarter way through the year, so hopefully everyone is going ok! lately, I have been trying to bust my ass with practicing to be a better artist. I seem to make my colours muddy and have no idea on how to fix this. Maybe its my process?
