i'm a hack
  • as per the current trend in my life I got sick again. Ended up getting another sinus infection and stomach flu, and then stomach flu again while having the sinus infection. I don't even remember january happening, as I slept through it entirely, flaked out of team chow...and got my sketchbook deleted on account of not posting.

here's some stuff from this week.
  • nice to see you posting again man! the head look awesome, I am always saying that you express the light very very well - nice job! (please post the steps of the head if you can)The enviro studies and the figure ones looking good as well, love the brush strokes you've used they give them really painterly look.keep with these great studies man - it's inspirational!!! :P
    *watch ya health :D
  • Hey Devin, its bad to hear about the sinus infection but its good to see your stuff back up again. Really like the life and colour studies. Really strong use of values in the landscapes. Nothing to crit, hope your feeling better man.
  • welcome back and good studies, about those sketches you might spend a bit time on proportion, love that face I can tell you draw a lot with mr delicious
  • beautiful color about the face and environments, really like the use of color!!
  • thanks guys...so here is a STRUGGLE

trying to do an environment out of my head...these both came outta the same PSD. I didn't have a clear focus in mind, which u can probably tell ;(
i will never make fun of rayk for struggling with chars...environments are BALLS hard.
  • some environment studies. Kinda just doing loose copies, still trying to get a feel for the brushes.
  • Looking pretty good, not very much I can comment on. One thing I did notice though is that you seem to be missing in most of them is the brighter values, like, the last one in the snow, those very bright points, you can also see it easily on the bales of hay in number 4.
  • ahhh I didn't notice that, thank you!!
I noticed I had some issues on the darker values [while working] but I see I ignored those bright brights...I am such a sissy.

here's a process vid of the last enviro study I did

  • Hey Devin, nice piece. Although the whole image itself is really saturated, there arnt enough greyish light values in the background to really bring the chick into the foreground. Always a really nice use of colour:)
  • Devin, you need to pay more attention to edges and the way you leave brush texture in place. Try to avoid having the same edges in both the sky and ground. At the moment the sky and ground are both rendered exactly the same so they appear flat and on the same plane. Try using softer edges on the sky, and harder edges in the ground. Also don't add much texture to the sky, skies are far cleaner then the ground unless you are wanting to focus on a major cloud front coming.

Sorry no time for a paint over atm, I will try to do some later.
  • thanks moojuice
i will keep that in mind rayk!

    oodles of doodles~ [avoiding studies]
  • swamp monster
  • i did a livestream, and talked about my two main working processes.
these are the results of it. each is about 1 hr
  • Hey Devin, nice step by step. Its good to see your process and how you develop a character. Really liking the beastie, nothing to crit.
  • thanks moojuice!
these are both from mini challenges with some friends.

the challenge was 10 creatures in 1 hour. It was a lot harder than I thought, but real fun!!
The first set I did in 40 minutes, and the 2nd one I had the full hour, so I relaxed and got caught! I think overall I had better designs on the 2nd one tho.
  • some sketches from the weekend.
  • u can better!!! :)
  • I think some of those value sketches could use a little bit more contrast between values - they are sitting a little bit too close to each other. You can always use curves on adjustment layer to play around with getting more contrast to give them a little bit more dimensionality.
  • some good studies and character designs here man, and seem you can draw hardcore again that is great, about the monster I just do a quick sketch but I think what I am showing you is the similar problem like that muscular guy, just try to give more life and perspective to characters.
