Zulu's awesome book of awesomness
  • Hi there guys! here is my little room where ill put my stuff so i can get some critiques to improove my work, i really need some other artist to say their mind about my worlk and what i should do to get better. Ill leave some stuff here so you can check what i do.
  • Welcome to DG Zulu!

You seem to be quite adapt at character work, nice rendering. I think you environments need the most work, as they are quite flat spatially due to a lack of overlapping and receding forms. Also your orc dude could use a more exciting camera angle than straight on to help with getting more interest and mood in the piece, have a look at Hermans SB, he has lots of good example of selling a character through the right pose and angle. Something to keep in mind for any future stuff you work on ;).

Hope you don't mind me resizing the orc, he was a little too big for the forum...
  • Wow, nice lady turnaround Zulu, has a nice character design and form. I like the dirty hand print on her behind, nice touch ;) I'm looking forward to seeing your updates and I agree with rayk on working with your environments, could be a good idea to do some studies on them. :)
  • Thanks for the comments guys!, and yeah, environments are my weakness, i gotta get better on that, so any suggestions would be great!, also have to work on the poses, and push more my imagination, i left that behind and i need to do some exersices to get it back, sorry for the orc thing, i forgot to check the size xD.

Now for the sketches, i did a sketch of a pose with more movement, had a lot of fun with that, some color sketch trying to play more with crazy colors, shapes and brushes to render, and also environment sketches from imagination, next time will be with reference.

Would be great to have some directions to see what i need to work more, i really want to push more my imagination, but i guess i need the proper "tools" to do that.
  • back again with more, some movie caps studies, from indiana jones 4 and fear and loathing in las vegas, a color sketch trying to get some rocks and a line work, starting some illustration, i would like to do it with your help guys, with all the critiques you can give me, now is not much but im sure youll have something to say ^_^
  • Hi Zulu, I don't have much to say about the studies, but with your own illustration. Have a read of loomis about his suggestions for composition, with rules of thirds and whatnot. Apparently, it is boring to have your characters right in the dead center of your illustration, it is far more interesting to look at when they are off center. Like break your image into 3 vertically, and perhaps shift the important stuff closer to the first or last 'column'

Other than that everything is looking good :)
  • your film studies are good especially the big red face that guy good capure of lighting and shape, about your figure drawing you are keen on holding the value but you miss the porportion, I suggest you to do some quick figure drawing it can help your proportion, about your own drawings I think you just need to draw more with solid focus on each one
  • Thanks a lot for the comments guys, very useful!, i did what you suggested of the rule of thirds, did some studies of landscapes, some weird creature that i also did on pencil (gotta do some scans) and some line work without ref, ill make some character concepts of the guy and girl standing, and im playing arround with the other chick.
Give me some crits and comments!! =D
  • Hi Zulu,

Everything is looking good, the only thing that looks off to me are the proportions of the standing girl.
  • thanks man!, here's some more stuff, hopefully next time ill scan some pencils, happy new year in advance! ^^
  • Looks good, the only thing I can see is maybe try and use bigger brushes, they look a bit messy is all : /
  • thanks for the comments robert, here is some of my last stuff, had a lot of fun with The Agent, and im doing some more character concepts, crits are more than welcome! cheers guys!
  • Hey, im here again with some scans and some thoughts, i think my bigest issue is rendering, it seems that i still cant find a good rendering, something between loose and detailed, my stuff ends up being stiff, so if you guys can help me with that ill be very greatful, here are some pencil sketches and studies and some latest digital stuff.
  • oh god, forgot theres no resize here, crap!, and i cant delete the files, says i have no permission >.
  • Wow those pictures are big! :) Nice stuff man, its good to see people are still posting! :) With your rendering it seems to be your scratching at the mass, which causes alot of sharp angles. I hope that helps.
