Hey man, nice post of stuff! Your top post of images can all use a bit more temperature contrast to really push them a bit further - some of those could just be pushed by either using a cooler shadow or a warmer highlight on the flesh - they just need to be pushed out of sitting in neutral colours to add some life and vibrancy to them.

Sargent study is good, my nit pick is you didn't push the darks further like in the original painting so the girls dress doesn't feel as contrasted as it should be. Also looking closer at the painting, I think the dress has a few very soft cool shades through it.

Sorry I can't do a quick paintover to illustrate what I mean, I should be able it once I get back home.

    Post more!

You can either keep posting in your own thread or post in the daily art grind thread (which is not my thread, but public dump ground haha), I don't mind either way! :D

Yep, the top pic has the right idea - looking much better now that you just pushed that temperature bit further.

Colour study from photo is much better than your previous ones - but watch those greens! Especially on the left tree and ground they they are sitting on the same plane - somewhat flattening out the image. Don't forget that the hue shift as a surface recedes into space.

As for the enviro from your imagination - you need to establish the lighting right in the beginning. I did a quick paint over to show one of many ways you can take this peice - the key in this is try to establish interest through the way you are lighting it! Where is the light coming from, how strong it is, what is the overall ambience and so on.

Hope it helps, it was very quick but I hope it gives you an idea.

Okay man, much better with that enviro, but still something about the cool vs warm balance is throwing me off - it might be red colour of those undercast rocks, you could make a warm light like a yellow orange coming up from below to hit them so you get a nice contrast between the light sources. Otherwise I think you might need to get rid of that red/brown shadows and make them a very cool green blue (and push the light a more aqua/sky blue). I might have a crack at it some time later.

Here is your character (to show you can push it even further!). Don't be afraid to use the background to help with your lighting, I think lighting characters with out some form of background is quite tough.
