thanks guys, rayk your paint over is nice I will change the light source completely you are right I should focus the light on the main focal points, mine has light on something totally not important on the picture lol, about the girl I will change thigh then
Good update, like needed! Finally some cool colours, the purple on the stockings (the rim) could still go a bit cooler - I noticed all your purples are always warm. The hair in the original is a little darker more saturated blue, but that's mostly me nit picking.
damn I need to look at temperature more haha, some value and post practices
Yes Herman colour practice is much needed! Value is good and all, but I think temperature relationship is more important. With the value studies, don't be afraid to push contrast in a few places to make the drawing really pop - epecially by having the "hottest" spot and "coolest" spot in each study to draw you eye.
thanks man I know color is what I need to practice first, just take some time have some break man, you should draw more characters too, well I try to use more cold color this time and keep things clear and paint on small canvas still in wip crits need, also I will finish the master painting and that chick and I will go back to that environment, I will redesign it as I think you are right, the scale on my old one is not right, don't feel like a realistic environment
Again good, very nice start - I think working in big shapes is helping your colour. The general ground colour can still probably be pushed a little darker and cooler, also I think the skin that's in shadow could use a bit of dark red/marone glaze so it's not sitting so close to a grey. With the bounce light on her back thigh and lower stomach I think that should be a cooler pinkish colour rather than a yellow brown as the general ambience isn't warm enough to warrant for them to be so warm.
Here is a thumb to show what I mean, hope it helps however I'm not very sure of how flesh should be in shadow so I might be wrong here.
thanks rayk, I took your advice, another Sargent study,
ahhh nice studies Herman, very nice, no crits for now !
Hey buddy, keep the good stuff coming! However, digital painting has a natural disadvantage with edges and texture that has to be overcome. With real paint it's easier to get crisp edges because you can load different paint onto the brush (to get contrast at the edge) and because the paint itself interacts with the light depending on the thickness of the paint. Just painting opaquely doesn't give you a 'hard' edge, it's basically the traditional equivalent of a firm edge. I had this discussion with jon hardesty when I was doing a longer bouguereau study and just couldn't nail the right edges, etc. and it didn't look right at all because it didn't have much texture. I'll attach the bouguereau study here, it wasn't that great but I learnt a lot from it
Anyways that being said don't go crazy with textures, it's not even remotely on the same level of importance as proportion, value, etc. I put the original next to my touchup, you tell me if it looks better or not :0
Hey Herman, looking at the sargent study it's quite spot on to the original, apart from having softer edges which is not really an a big issue since colour for you is more important.
You character paint is going well, I think you just need to push it to the finish line as all the colour is there now. However composition wise it's a little flat - you might need to bring in a foreground element on the lower left instead of right to give the eye a better eye flow. Here is a quick paint over (mainly ground).
