Hey man, nice post of stuff! Your top post of images can all use a bit more temperature contrast to really push them a bit further - some of those could just be pushed by either using a cooler shadow or a warmer highlight on the flesh - they just need to be pushed out of sitting in neutral colours to add some life and vibrancy to them.
Sargent study is good, my nit pick is you didn't push the darks further like in the original painting so the girls dress doesn't feel as contrasted as it should be. Also looking closer at the painting, I think the dress has a few very soft cool shades through it.
Sorry I can't do a quick paintover to illustrate what I mean, I should be able it once I get back home.
Post more!
You can either keep posting in your own thread or post in the daily art grind thread (which is not my thread, but public dump ground haha), I don't mind either way! :D
I see I try to work more on temperature now, and I am painting a environment piece now, all wip give me some critiques, I think we should separate our thread it is easier to give comment on
Yep, the top pic has the right idea - looking much better now that you just pushed that temperature bit further.
Colour study from photo is much better than your previous ones - but watch those greens! Especially on the left tree and ground they they are sitting on the same plane - somewhat flattening out the image. Don't forget that the hue shift as a surface recedes into space.
As for the enviro from your imagination - you need to establish the lighting right in the beginning. I did a quick paint over to show one of many ways you can take this peice - the key in this is try to establish interest through the way you are lighting it! Where is the light coming from, how strong it is, what is the overall ambience and so on.
Hope it helps, it was very quick but I hope it gives you an idea.
Okay man, much better with that enviro, but still something about the cool vs warm balance is throwing me off - it might be red colour of those undercast rocks, you could make a warm light like a yellow orange coming up from below to hit them so you get a nice contrast between the light sources. Otherwise I think you might need to get rid of that red/brown shadows and make them a very cool green blue (and push the light a more aqua/sky blue). I might have a crack at it some time later.
Here is your character (to show you can push it even further!). Don't be afraid to use the background to help with your lighting, I think lighting characters with out some form of background is quite tough.
EEEEPPIIIIIIIC (I think I need to make an emoticon to express this).
Colour is looking better, you could probably push the darks/cools a little on the soldier guy, otherwise the other colour pieces are much better than previous stuff!. The sketchbook pages, well AWESOME lots of good stuff, love it all.
thanks rayk, for a long time fucking up my art, I figure out 1 thing I am line guy without line I am nothing, direct paint is not suitable to me, speed paint is not suitable to me, more I paint more I fuck up the form and design is shit, so I think I need is color my line work better not paint color better lol, thanks for your critiques give me more, I will try to give you some
Hey man, here is a paintover from me: Even if you are keeping your line art which is fine, still try to work globally and then down. Establish the overall mood and place first, that will make your life finishing the character off so much easier as you will have something to key it to.
Also note that I'm painting with a fairly big brush and putting down the least strokes I need, helps to keep the painting from becoming too busy too soon, and also lets you put the small details on parts where you want to focus.
thanks for your crits man I will use that method on the coming one, by the way those 4 thumbnails which one looks better as a 1930 super villain, more crits thanks!!
Hey I think the one on right of first row is probably the more 1930 villain out of those, plus it's the one that reads the best.
Colour is looking better, it's starting to be more balanced but still some palces you can use a bit more cools - like the first colour image, places like her neck and upper chest that shadow could be a little cooler to really push the contrast a bit.
nice try Herman :) two things came out my mined looking the last one:
1st - the perspective of the cup is kind of wrong
2nd - the composition right now with these strokes (everything with same brush) are hard to read, cuz everything looks kind of soft ..I know this is a WIP but that's come to my mind ;) almost to forgot the drapery doesn't read well too
keep showing mate, looking forward to see what's next :P
thanks peter it is a terrible still image painting just try a new tech, I will do a better one tomorrow I promise haha, new draft of that 1930 super villain character
